Park project moving ahead, thanks to Terrapin pledge

LOCK HAVEN -- If Dave Harger has his way, Veteran's Park in Lock Haven will look different -- soon.
The park, which sits along Water Street, is in dire need of repair. Harger, who works with Terrapin Pennsylvania, would like to see the entire park re-done.
"Yes, absolutely," Harger said, "you can take a look around. This is literally rotting as we look at it. Some of the architecture is really dated. It needs cleaned and maybe rearranged."
Harger said that he would like to see all veterans honored, not just those from certain periods of time.
"There's nothing in here for the Civil War … it was almost like 'hey, we're just going to throw something up.' It needs to have a central flow. It needs to be Clinton County veterans. And when you leave, the idea is that you understand what the veterans from this county have done and for how long," he said.
Harger is trying to coordinate the project -- which has no official name as of yet. His VetForce is a newly-established veterans-based security firm.
Terrapin Pennsylvania, which uses VetForce for its security, has pledged $25,000 toward the project.
"This would never happen without Terrapin. They're making this happen. We sat down and they said they wanted to do veteran community outreach. They asked, 'what can we do … something for the veterans?' I said, 'Veteran's Park.' Just take time and look," Harger said. "We've visited several locations. We're trying not to (duplicate) those, obviously. We want something contemporary that will last for the next 100 years."
Harger has some ideas of what he'd like to see.
"We're going to be working with medium -- the stone, the steel or the bronze -- that's what we're working through," Harger said.
And while the $25,000 is a good starting point, Harger knows it will take much more money to complete the project.
"I'm taking money … anyone who wants to give me money, send me a check," Harger said with a laugh. "I'll take any amount. I don't care if it's pennies or millions. I'll take any amount. The more money, the more we can do."
Harger would like to start by putting visions on paper and replacing some of the landscaping.
"The trees are dead and the bushes are overgrown," he said. "Everything needs to be manicured. There's a lot that needs to go into it."
