Castanea man admits offering ‘girl’ $1,000 for sex
WILLIAMSPORT — A Castanea man has admitted he offered an individual he thought was a 12-year-old girl $1,000 to have sex with him.
Michael S. Grenninger, 37, made the admission Thursday when he pleaded guilty in U.S. Middle District Court to a charge of production of child pornography.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Geoffrey W. MacArthur said Grenninger in July 2017 engaged in social media chats with an undercover female Virginia state trooper he thought was 12-year-old Courtney.
He offered to pay her $1,000 if he could travel to Virginia to have sex with her, the prosecutor said.
There is evidence Grenninger made plans through chats to meet an 11-year-old girl in a New York orphanage, the prosecutor said.
The Virginia trooper who posed as Courtney contacted state police in the Lock Haven area, who executed a search warrant at Grenninger’s Castanea Twp. home, MacArthur said.
Multiple computer devices, more than 1,000 images of child pornography and multiple videos of Skype chats with minors were seized, he said.
Grenninger initially was charged by state police in Clinton County. Those counts were withdrawn after the federal indictment.
Excerpts from chat messages with minors were contained in the state police affidavit.
Charges including possession of child pornography, enticement and transfer of obscene matter to a minor are to be dismissed at sentencing, the date of which has not been set.
Grenninger, who remains detained, is facing up to 30 years in prison. A sentencing date has not been set.
