SOUTH AVIS – The union representing some 100 Jersey Shore Steel workers is accusing the company of unfair labor practices as employees continue to work under an expired contract.
United Steel Workers Local 4907 President Scott Mann said the company is proposing significant pay cuts for some workers while demanding employees pay more for health insurance.
"The contract expired in 2015," Mann said. "After that, we worked under a series of contract extensions that ended in 2017. Since then, we've been working without a contract. All this together means that we haven't seen a raise in five years."
Mann alleged the company has broken federal labor law while committing "numerous unfair labor practices at the mill."
The company's actions, he alleged, are intended to intimidate workers from standing together to fight for a fair deal.
"We work hard and we're serious about seeing the company succeed. It's time for the company to come to the table and bargain a contract that reflects our contributions," he said.
Mann declined to comment on the possibility of a workers' strike.
Jersey Shore Steel Co. was founded in 1938 by John A. Schultz.
The company is now owned and operated by Jack and Peter Schultz, the third generation of Schultzes to run the family business.
Located at 70 Maryland Ave. in South Avis in Clinton County, Jersey Shore Steel produces rail steel angles.
It also operates Met-Fab Inc. in Loyalsock Township, Lycoming County.
