BELLEFONTE -- The concerts will continue at Talleyrand Park.
At Monday night's Bellefonte Borough Council meeting, Bellefonte Mayor Tom Wilson raised the question if concerts could continue through the end of August and into September.
The mayor said the Bellefonte Historical and Cultural Association asked for approval for an additional pair of Summer Sounds from The Gazebo in Talleyrand Park.
"I was contacted by BHCA to bring this up," Wilson said. "They are asking for council's permission to extend the 'Concerts in the Park' for a couple of weeks and possibly into September. They have some additional funds and things have been going pretty well down there."
The additional concerts were approved unanimously by council.
"We have a couple of concerts lined up for the last two Sundays in August," Wilson explained. "If they can get two more weeks out of it, I think they have enough money to cover that."
The August concerts begin at 7 p.m. The Denicats will play from 7 to 8 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 23. The Denicats feature "swingin' blues and funk." Then, on Aug. 30, the Western Range Trio will take to the gazebo stage. The Western Range Trio feature "western swing and country."
The lawn at Talleyrand Park will feature spray painted dots so those attending are able to practice social distancing. Masks are also required at the event.
"I voluntereed to re-spot the dots on the lawn. They are starting to get a little faded," Wilson said.
While the concerts were passed unanimously, one council member brought up a concern. Council member Doug Johnson said that he would like to see those attending use the crosswalks at the conclusion of the concert.
"At the end of the concert, there are people doing illegal jaywalking across High Street," Johnson said. "Do you think that if (police) officers aren't involved in something else, they might be able to help us out down there with some observation of traffic control?"
Bellefonte Borough Police Chief Shawn Weaver said that his officers will patrol the area.
The first three weeks of the "Summer Sounds from The Gazebo in Talleyrand Park" had to be canceled in June because Centre County was still in Gov. Tom Wolf's "yellow phase." The first concert of the year took place on June 28.
The "Summer Sounds from The Gazebo in Talleyrand Park" began in 1981. Lawn chairs and blankets are suggested for those attending.
The concerts are sponsored by BHCA and supported by a gift from the Garver Charity Fund, BPOE #1094, Bellefonte Lodge (Bellefonte Elks) and by the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts through its regional funding partnership, Pennsylvania Partners in the Arts (PPA). PPA is administered in this region by the Pennsylvania Rural Arts Alliance.
