Gabe’s set to fill vacant Bon-Ton location at Nittany Mall

STATE COLLEGE — One of the anchor slots at the Nittany Mall will soon be occupied.

The former Bon-Ton Department Store, which was most recently used as a COVID-19 free testing site, will have a new life as a Gabe’s clothing store. It will be the first Gabe’s in the Centre Region. Previously, the closest Gabe’s was along Pleasant Valley Boulevard in Altoona.

Gabe’s was founded in 1961 in Morgantown, W.Va. There are more than 110 stores, according to Gabes.com, there are stores in Delaware, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, New Jersey, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia.

The Mason Asset Management team, which oversees Gabe’s, believes it will be a welcome addition to the Centre Region.

“Gabe’s is an economically priced department store that will provide the community with clothing for men, women, and kids; in addition to home goods and essentials,” a spokesperson said in an email.

The location of the Nittany Mall was appealing, the spokesperson said.

“We are always looking for new and different tenants to add value to our community. Gabe’s will give shoppers another alternative while they navigate through the Nittany Mall, and we are excited about the value Gabe’s will bring to its neighboring tenants. We are committed to the future of Nittany Mall and its use as a retail and lifestyle destination. The events of 2020 brought a lot of changes to the retail industry, as well as to Nittany Mall, but our goal is to provide State College and the surrounding community with a plethora of retail shopping experiences,” the email said.

Gabe’s will fill out the four anchor store slots. The former Sears location will soon become Rural King. Dunham’s has taken over the former JC Penney’s site. Centre County’s first mini-casino is expected to take over the former Macy’s location.

Bon-Ton closed its doors in 2018. No date has been set for Gabe’s opening.

“The opening date is still TBD at this point,” the email said. “Gabe’s will be renovating the former BonTon location to better suit their needs, so the timeline will be heavily dependent on that process.”
