Bellefonte drops ‘Red’ from nickname; will go by Raiders

1 min read

BELLEFONTE – After nearly a year of controversy surrounding the Bellefonte Red Raiders logo, mascot and nickname, the school board came to a decision on Wednesday night.

By a 6-3 vote, the school board decided to drop Red from the school’s nickname. The district will now begin the process of finding a new logo/mascot in the form of a Raider.

Voting yes on Wednesday night to remove the word red were: Mark Badger, Kristen Bruckner, Julie Fitzgerald, Max Kroell, Rodney Musser and Donna Smith. Voting no were: Board president Jon Guizar, Jeff Steiner and Kimberly Weaver.

At a special meeting on April 13, the board voted 8-1 to retire the Red Raiders logo. All Native American imagery will be removed from all schools in the district over the course of the next year.

While retaining the Raider was looked at as a small victory by those hoping to keep the nickname, the logo change will likely cost the district hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Starting at /week.
