Local folks commemorate the crucifixion of Jesus Christ

LANA MUTHLER/THE EXPRESS

Jane White and Ken Bierly led the walkers carrying the wooden cross at Friday morning’s Cross Walk to McElhattan United Methodist Church. As is tradition, a small group of local parishners gathered on a frigid Good Friday morning to remember the day when Jesus Christ was crucified. The group met in the early morning darkness and took turns as the sun rose carrying the cross down a path from the Wayne Township recreation area to the nearby church. As always, it was a solemn ceremony, as they joined Christians around the world commemorating the death of Jesus Christ on the cross — a death that they believe atoned for the sins of the world. The event began with prayer and words from Pastor Jay Saldana who leads the 200-member Lock Haven United Methodist Parish that includes churches in Swissdale, Dunnstown, Liberty and McElhattan. At right, Pastor Saldana describes Jesus’ pain on that fateful day as the group prepares their hearts for the cross walk.
