LOCK HAVEN -- If you had hopes of going to a Lock Haven University winter sports event soon, you'll need to find something else to do.
Last week, the university announced an updated spectator policy for home athletic events, which will includes men's basketball, women's basketball and wrestling matches.
The updated policy will began over the weekend, on Saturday, Jan. 29. It is the university's response to growing concerns related to COVID-19 and the fast-spreading Omicron variant.
Until further notice, attendance at all home athletic competitions will be restricted to participating student-athletes, coaches, officials, athletic administration and the essential personnel required to host the event. No tickets will be sold.
However, LHU will allow each competing student-athlete to have up to two guests attend. All spectators must be listed on the official LHU team list and must remain properly masked while indoors. No visiting fans will be permitted to attend.
This change to the spectator policy is a direct result of continued disregard for the university's masking policy at recent indoor competitions. It is being instituted to help mitigate the spread of COVID-19 and give LHU student-athletes the best chance at completing their seasons without further postponements and cancellations. It comes as over a dozen PSAC competitions have been postponed or canceled in recent weeks due to the spread of COVID-19.
There is no announced timetable for the return of all spectators to LHU indoor athletic competitions. University officials will continue to monitor the situation over the coming weeks, and will provide updates if and when changes occur.
