LOCK HAVEN -- With a light-hearted energy full of encouragement, Robb Elementary School Principal Tyler Barth welcomed the teachers back from their summer break to get the 2022-2023 school year started.

The teachers attended meetings Thursday morning in preparation of the upcoming school year. Students will be back to class on Wednesday, Aug. 31.

The halls and the rooms are decorated, in order for classes to start and ready to welcome students back Thursday morning.

Teachers who were waiting to start their day were full of excitement and content.

A breakfast was provided for them in the library before their meeting and morning activities began.

Following breakfast, everyone gathered downstairs to prepare for their morning meeting.

"I'm really excited. I can't wait to see my kids again," said special education teacher, Jacque Newlen.

Speaking on the topic of the teacher shortage she said, "It's so sad actually because I always wanted to be a teacher. I kind of always expected there would be more people who would want to, but there's not as many anymore," Newlan said of the current teacher shortage.

Barth introduced new staff joining Robb while speaking about the start of the new school year. Two student teachers from Lock Haven University will be joining them for their last semester also.

"I'm excited to finally put into practice what I've learned throughout college and to just build relationships with my teacher and the students in our classroom. I graduate in December so I'll be able to get a job easily and have a lot of options," Tara Reese, Lock Haven University student teacher, said.

"Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle," Barth reminded the teachers. He encouraged the teachers to apply it to the students and each other.

Barth led staff in various exercises such as tips on lesson planning and fun activities to help the teachers get started with their year.

They went on to listen to a welcome back video from KCSD Superintendent Dr. Jacquelyn Martin followed by a speech from Dr. Bill Dagget.

Dagget, is the founder of the International Center for Leadership in Education (ICLE). Educators worldwide recognize Dagget, the creator of the Rigor/Relevance Framework, for his proven ability to lead school reform and help Pre-K-12 educators effectively prepare students for the future.

He spoke with encouraging and motivating words for the teachers beginning the new school year.

Martin, who was making her rounds to all of KCSD's schools, stopped in to visit with the principal and teachers.

"In Keystone Central our upcoming goals for the school year are to continue our work to be a school district that is focused on the future of education so that we can provide students with an education that will prepare them for their future and not our past. Additionally one of the key elements of being a future focused school district is increasing the level of student engagement throughout the school year with every child, every day. We're embarking on more ways to keep the student at the center of learning and make sure that the student is a coauthor of their own learning journey," said Martin.
