MACKEYVILLE — The ninth annual Hooskow is in full swing through tonight.
More than 50 carvers from all over the country are attending this year’s Hooskow Chainsaw Carver’s Event at the Clinton County Fairgrounds. Guest carvers from Texas, Maine, New York, New Hampshire, Vermont, Pennsylvania and more are chainsawing away and making art.
The Hooskow was started by a professional wood carver, Jeffery Donoughe. According to Donoughe, this is the third year the event is being held at the Clinton County Fairgrounds. The event used to be held at Restless Oaks Restaurant in McElhattan. The weather for this year’s Hooskow has also been better than previous years, according to Donoughe.
“This is the best weather we’ve had in years for the Hooskow,” he said.
This year’s Hooskow is offering quick carving events, a big carving auction, musical entertainment and more. There are also craft, equipment and food vendors. Food vendors will include Cogan Concessions, Sam the Hot Dog Man, Twilight Diner and Laura Mae’s Smoked Meats.

“We have these quick carves everyday during the evening hours,” Donoughe said during one of Friday’s quick carving events.
Today at 2 p.m., there will be an auction held for the big carvings made by the guest carvers.
“The guys will be (done) carving (Friday night) to get their masterpieces done for the auction … a lot of the big fresh stuff you see will be in the auction,” Donoughe said.
Fires were spread around to keep everyone warm. Hay bales were set up for seating around the grounds as well.
Tonight there will be musical entertainment by banjo player, Travis Barner also known as the “Fat Man,” performs. His performance will begin at 7 p.m.

The gates for the Hooskow open at 10 a.m. and are open past dark.
“People are welcome to come in here even after dark and walk around — talk to the carvers,” Donoughe said.
Admission for the Hooskow is $5. Admission is free to everyone wearing a costume for Halloween.
