McELHATTAN -- The Wayne Township Landfill holds a 21 percent market share increase since 2017.
WTL General Manager Jay Alexander released the 2022 market share report during the Solid Waste Authority's monthly meeting Wednesday.
The report was compared to a previous one made in 2017 and comprises 16 counties including Clinton, which WTL has shares in.
Overall, the landfill went from 17 percent in 2017 to 21 percent in 2022. WTL brought in 329,219 total tonnage including Clinton County's share.
In 2017, WTL brought in a total of 259,568 tonnage including the county. Out of the counties in 2022 to drop, Juniata was significant. Juniata dropped from a 70 percent share in 2017 to 34 percent in 2022. According to Alexander, the reasoning was due to the type of residual food/liquid waste.
"It was a lot of sloppy food waste and we had to divert some of that away because it was just too much of a mess," he said. "The business was good but the operational issues were really challenging."
At a tonnage standpoint, the landfill is bringing in more. The market still grew since 2017 despite the drop in market share percentage.
In other business, after Tereva and WTL are finished with their gas capture project, plans for more wells will be made.
According to Alexander, new wells will be drilled starting in the spring/summer.
"We have got a lot of data we are bringing together. We are starting that progress and we assume in the spring or summer they'll be in to drill a lot of new wells so we are able to capture the gas we are trying to regenerate," he said.
Also in other business, the board approved Resolution 2023-01 for Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program. The resolution will allow a grant agreement with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, in which the Solid Waste Authority will be identified as a Grantee of the Commonwealth. They will be awarded $1,120,000 to help improve Wayne Township Landfill as part of the resolution.
For the month of January, WTL earned a total of $1,650,000 in sales.
"We got a really good start to the year," Alexander said.
