McELHATTAN -- The Wayne Township Landfill is closing in on a completion date for its ongoing gas capture project with Tereva.
WTL General Manager Jay Alexander gave an update to the Clinton County Solid Waste Authority Board during its meeting this week.
According to Alexander, the energy company has their plant up and running on the landfill's site in McElhattan.
"They (Tereva) are cleaning gas, looping it through and destroying it in the flare right now. They are just about ready to start sending some down the pipeline," he said.
Before the landfill begins capturing gas, WTL and Tereva have to run through which company is responsible for various operational matters.
"We have a few different operational things we are working through with Tereva on who is responsible for what. But we will get to where we need to be. We have a little bit of a different understanding about what they need to do now that they are on the ground and have people working," Alexander said.
The two companies will be holding weekly meetings involved with the operations.
According to Alexander, the landfill and Tereva are in talks about also spending $70,000 to upgrade pipes and wells. He added the cost would not be an everyday expense. Once the matters are finalized, the landfill will begin collecting gas.
In other business, the authority approved its 2022 audit.
Auditor Lea Ann Plessinger attended Wednesday's meeting to go over the audit. She presented the draft of the audit to board members for their approval.
According to the draft, total liabilities and net assets amounted to $44,934,500; total cash and cash equivalents at the end of the year totaled $6,074,268; total cash provided by operating activities came to $4,220,637; total operating revenue amounted to $20,236,729; and total operating expenses were $17,994,277.
Prior to the authority's monthly meeting, the board held a special annual meeting for elected officials.
The following nominations were approved by the board: Terry Weaver as chairperson, Jim Lovette as vice-chairperson, Linda Leonard as secretary, Fred E. Beury as treasurer and Bruce Peters as assistant secretary/treasurer. Paul Ryan of Coploff, Ryan and Houser was also approved to be the board's designated solicitor. Jim Maguire, a member of the board, recently sent in his resignation. He had served on the authority's board since 1996.
According to the general manager's report, the landfill's sales for March amounted to $1,785,000.
"We had a really good month. About everything we have is busy. Expenses were a little over 1.1 million," Alexander said.
Revenue went up for the first quarter of the year, he said. The landfill is operating at 22 percent of their budgeted income.
"Our first quarter is usually our slowest quarter of the year. For the expense side we are at 19 percent of our budgeted income. We try to always trail our income number with our expense number and we are sticking true to that," Alexander said.
Michael Crist, the environmental manager and county recycling coordinator for the landfill, summarized the annual county recycling report for 2022. According to the report, the landfill brought in 18,000 tons of recyclables for the year. The landfill generated 38.8 percent in total received recyclables. The 18,000 tons helped reduce greenhouse gas emissions by about 52,000 tons of greenhouse gases, according to Crist.
"The department has a goal for all counties to receive 35 percent and we have been above that goal since 2008. The county as a whole does well in recycling," Crist said.
The authority announced WTL is holding its 22nd annual John B. Hoy, Jr. Memorial Charity Golf Tournament on Sept. 29. Sponsorship levels include Platinum sponsors for $3,500, Cocktail sponsors for $2,500, Tournament Sponsors for $1,500; goat herd sponsors for $1,000; and hole sponsors for $200. Registration fees for teams of four are $600 and single golfers are $150.
The tournament is looking for Clinton County charities and/or non-profits to become sponsors. Interested non-profits can submit a letter of interest to the landfill. Submissions are accepted until June 2. Sponsors can register by sending an email to Thresa Lingenfelter at thresa@waynetwplandfill.com.
