Including family and supporters, a couple thousand people were in Hyner yesterday as 1,400 people participated in the annual Hyner Challenge. The 50K started at 8 a.m., with 400 runners, while the 25K had 1,000 registered to compete. Both races start in the fields on the eastern side of Hyner Bridge before leading the entrants through trails and hills, with the culmination for many breaking the crest of Hyner View. Well-wishers were seen throughout the day by participants: supporters were present at the start of the races, the end of Hyner Bridge, the view, the three aid stations -- and even some along the trails, encouraging runners to keep pushing. The runners, for their part, welcomed the mostly rain-free conditions. A testament to the participants’ mentality was on display at "Carl's Way," the first incline of the day. As many of the 50K entrants headed up the single track trail, dozens verbally cheered on the pain that was about to be Hyner Challenge 2023.
