The 2023 Primary Election is seeing multiple contested races, particularly on the Republican ballot.
Eight municipal seats up for election this cycle -- ranging from supervisors, councilmembers and constables -- are seeing two or more candidates vying for a spot on the November ballot.
The Express is highlighting each of these races:
BALD EAGLE TOWNSHIP
Two Bald Eagle Township residents are looking to punch the Republican ticket for the November election. Incumbent Kenneth E. McGhee, Jr. and James R. Gill, Sr. will be featured on the Primary Ballot. The open seat is a six year term. On the Democratic side, no one has filed for the seat. McGhee currently serves as the board's vice-chairman, previously taking on roles as chairman during past years. Gill, a veteran, is a newcomer.
BEECH CREEK
Tim Muthler and Dennis E. Packer are hoping to move onto the November ballot for Beech Creek Township supervisor. The position would be a six year term. Muthler is the incumbent while Packer is a newcomer. Only one will be able to earn a spot on the next ballot. No Democratic candidate has filed for the seat in the Primary.
CRAWFORD TOWNSHIP
Incumbent Benjamin Eggler and newcomer Charles Styers, Jr. are listed on the Republican Primary Ballot for Crawford Township supervisor -- a six year term. No Democratic candidate has filed for the seat.
LAMAR TOWNSHIP
Two Republican candidates are looking to be named Lamar Township Constable. The race consists of incumbent Donald Tressler and newcomer Mark Miller. No Democratic candidate has filed for the position. The position is a six year term.
LOGANTON BOROUGH
Five Republican candidates will be featured on the ballot for Loganton Borough Council. But only three will move onto the November ballot. Three seats, each lasting four years, are opening up in 2024. Two incumbents -- Chris Scaff and Myron Seyler -- are featured on the ballot. Scaff is also running for a position on the Keystone Central School District Board of Directors Region I; Seyler currently serves as council's president. Newcomers Arthur Slaterbeck, Christopher Miller and James Jordan are also looking to punch their ticket. On the Democratic side, two candidates are expected to move onto the ballot -- as the option to vote for three is included on the ballot. Incumbents Judy S. Karstetter and Dianne E. Fye are both included on the ballot.
MILL HALL BOROUGH
A two-year Mill Hall Borough Council position has two candidates. Tom Evers and Derek Berry are hoping to move onto the November election. Whichever candidate moves forward will face lone Democratic candidate Michael J. Renninger.
PINE CREEK TOWNSHIP
Two Pine Creek Township Board of Supervisors seats are opening up in 2024. Incumbent Dean Edwards, Jr. and newcomer Michael Remick are vying for a two-year term on the board. In the six-year term slot, incumbent John Reese and newcomer Bryan Poorman are looking to move into the November election.
PORTER TOWNSHIP
Current Porter Township Board of Supervisors President Kevin Frank and newcomer Ryan Gates are competing for a six-year term. No Democratic candidate has filed for the six-year term. However, Democrat Keith L. Yearick is on the ballot for a four-year term on the board.
