BELLEFONTE -- Three area bridges will see improvements through partnership between the Centre County Board of Commissioners, the county planning office and PennDOT.
These rehabilitation projects will take place over the coming months, according to a release from the board.
The bridge rehabilitation projects are located on Fox Gap Road in Miles Township, Lower Coleville Road in Spring Township and Main Street, Orviston, Curtin Township.
The projects include significant upgrades to the structural integrity of the bridges, as well as enhancements to their usability and accessibility for motorists.
Rehabilitation work on the Fox Gap Road Bridge began in April 2023 by Glenn O. Hawbaker, Inc., with the installation of a temporary bridge.
Rehabilitation of the Lower Coleville Road Bridge is slated to begin mid-Summer 2023.
The Main Street Bridge in Orviston is in the final phases of design and approval. Construction is anticipated to begin late summer/early fall 2023, with final completion set for June 2024.
This bridge rehabilitation bundle is a first for Centre County.
In 2017/2018, the commissioners were awarded a $1,365,000 multi modal grant by The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation to cover construction costs.
Engineering, right of way, utility relocation and construction consultation costs are fully funded by the Centre County Commissioners through the Fee for Local Use Funds.
Other funding includes approximately $822,000 of Act 13 At Risk Bridge Funds with each of the benefiting municipalities, Miles, Spring and Curtin Townships, allotting $10,000 each to complete their respective projects.
Current costs to complete these bridge rehabs is estimated at approximately $2,800,000.
"During this partnership, the commissioners, in collaboration with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, have worked tirelessly to ensure that these projects are executed with utmost care and attention to detail, minimizing any potential disruptions to the traveling public," a release from the board said. "The commissioners are proud to be playing a role in the preservation and modernization of infrastructure, and they look forward to continuing to work to keep the community safe, connected and thriving."
