MILL HALL -- Three winners have been announced for the 50th Annual Clinton County Fair's guide cover contest.

Three eighth graders from Central Mountain Middle School and Sugar Valley Charter School will have their artwork on show during the fair. First place went to Sugar Valley's Lyla Breon. Her artwork will be on the cover of this year's fair guide. Two of Central Mountain's students were runner ups. Leah Karstetter won second place and Nevin Wynn won third.

Each of the winners are excited to see their work hung up during the fair. Their art will be on display in the fairgound's commercial building.

Previously, the contest was open to both seventh and eighth graders. This year, it was exclusively open to eighth graders.

Karstetter was also last year's first place winner when she was in seventh grade. Each year the concept changes for the contest.

"I did this last year. I won last year, too. I think the concept was a little different than this year since the titles were different," Karstetter said.

The contest began about ten years ago when the assistant treasurer, Connie Peiffer, went in front of the board of directors. From there, she contacted the art teachers at Central Mountain.

"I went to the board of directors and asked if we could have students participate and went to the art teachers. They recommended we go with seventh and eighth grade. However, now, we just go with the eighth graders," she explained.

Since then, the contest has been opened up to students across Clinton County. It is the second year that Sugar Valley Rural Charter School participated in the contest.

"We opened it up to the students in Clinton County and we had the Central Mountain Middle School for years. Sugar Valley Rural Charter School joined us the last couple years. We're hoping to get more of the students involved. It's a great opportunity," Peiffer said.

This year, over 100 students from both Central Mountain and Sugar Valley participated in the contest. About half of them submitted their works to be judged.

"It is a great opportunity for the students to get involved in the community and be able to win a little money," said Central Mountain art teacher, Jaime McCann.

Each winner received a check as well as a free one-day pass for this year's fair admission. All participating students received a free one day pass as well.

The 50th Annual Clinton County Fair will be held from July 29 through Aug. 5. For more information visit the fair's website at www.clintoncountyfairpa.com or give them a call at 570-726-4148.
