ROTE -- Supervisors in Lamar Township have unveiled planned 2023 road projects.
Chairman Wade Vonada listed the roads that will be getting FiberMatted and asphalt fog sealed this summer season during Tuesday's monthly meeting.
In total, Lizardville Road, Youngs Addition Road, Kryder Road, Hill Street, Rag Valley Road, South Heckmans Gap Road and most of Cedar Heights -- Cedar Heights Street, Sterling Road, Emerald Road and Ashland Street -- were approved by supervisors to be worked on.
According to Vonada, Rag Valley Road is in need of more than FiberMat. He said the road requires a single or triple seal. The same is needed along South Heckmans Gap Road.
"Rag Valley Road needs more than just FiberMat, it also needs what is called a single seal or a triple seal. And South Heckmans Gap also needs it because the base is weakening, the anthracite is moving some and we need to put some more into it structurally than what just the fibermat does," he said.
This road project is planned to be worked on in pieces. With work being conducted in segments, it will help the township with explaining the costs of each road, including the South Heckmans Gap Road and Rag Valley Road additions, according to Vonada.
"I do think it's critical that the additional work be done on Rag Valley and South Heckmans because they're in bad shape," he said.
The project will be put out for bid pending a chosen contractor. If the bid comes in lower than what the supervisors expect, they plan to incorporate Fernberg Road into the project. Fernberg Road has not been touched, outside of crack sealing, in 20 years, according to Vonada.
"Fernberg will be the only piece of road in the township that hasn't been touched in 20 years... If this comes in lower than expected, and if we're interested, get it FiberMatted while we're there. It is cracking, there are no heavy trucks on it, there is no heavy traffic on it," he said.
The supervisors also approved a bid opening for the Burrell Road Project. The winning lowest bidder went to Bob Toner, of Toner Trucking & Excavating. It will cost the township $3,320, according to township secretary, Tracy Roberts.
In other business, next Saturday the Lamar Township Fire Company will be holding the Annual Fallen Firefighter Memorial Golf Tournament, in memory of Brandon Steinbacher. The fundraising event is open to the public and they will be serving chicken BBQ. Tickets are $10 per person.
Supervisor and Lamar Township Fire Company member, Larry Rhine, urged people to abstain from burning. With the wildfires in Canada raging and sending a smokey haze to Pa., caution is advocated.
"I can't stress this enough right about now. With the wildfires -- the way the air current is, the smoke we're getting from Canada and the heat -- watch what you're burning," Rhine continued. "If you don't have to burn, don't burn."
