Foundation grant supports Sugar Valley gathering place

LOGANTON -- Spend some time with residents of Sugar Valley and very quickly you will see just how proud they are of their community.
That pride is very much evident during the Community Day Picnic, held in nearby Booneville each year in August.
Put on by area churches at the Booneville Campground, the picnic has been held for more than a century.
That, folks, is pride.
At this year’s picnic on Aug. 19, residents honored a woman whose life was dedicated to giving and to helping others.
Yvonne Weaver passed away in July 2022 after a courageous battle with cancer.
But she certainly will not be forgotten.
And she wanted to help right up to the end, drafting a grant request to the Clinton County Community Foundation to replace a deteriorating pavilion at the campground, install a hot water heater, replace a grill and exhaust fan and some doors in the concession building.
“We need to replace one pavilion as it is unsafe and the cost to repair it is more than to replace the structure,” Yvonne wrote.
The Foundation board responded with a $30,000 grant.
A plaque commemorating Yvonne was placed on the new pavilion; a ceremony to honor her was held in the adjacent Tabernacle.
Yvonne was a teaching assistant, mentor, businesswoman, para-professional, tax collector and passionate volunteer.
Indeed, she represented the Sugar Valley area as a board member of the Clinton County Community Foundation, while also helped to establish the Sugar Valley Historical Society, served with the Clinton County and Penns Valley Historical Societies, and did so much more.
But her favorite jobs were as a mother, wife, grandmother and great-grandmother, her family said.
Pastor Dan Christopher, who leads the United Methodist churches in Clintondale, Mackeyville, at Trinity and Albright, led prayers and thanked “all who helped” with the campground.
They also included Logan Township; Gene and Heidi Nicholas; Sugar Valley Builders; Donald Lamey Excavating; Schrack Farms, Confer’s Electric and many community members.
A woman from the audience declared “how hard she (Yvonne) worked” and described her as “amazing and dedicated.”
In his prayer, Pastor Dan described the campground as a “beautiful, peaceful place … where people feel Your presence and peace.”
“This place has been a blessing to so many over the years,” noting it has hosted birthdays, reunions, weddings, family picnics and more.

He said one of Yvonne’s favorite songs was, “In the Garden,” and everyone sang it.
