Kids Day hosts tons of fun activities

MACKEYVILLE -- It was a beautiful day on the Clinton County Fairgrounds as Kids Day kicked off with $10 ride wristbands from noon to 4 p.m.

Fun activities were set up across the grounds for kids of all ages, from making their own ice cream to a petting zoo with baby animals.

Children were given "Scavenger Hunt" cards that encouraged them to visit all of the attractions and vendors for the day, and every sheet that was filled out was entered into a drawing for some great prizes!

Dotterer Dairy sponsored the ice cream booth where kids were able to churn their own ice cream using bags of ice and rock salt -- the stand also had some toppings for the kids to sprinkle on top of their ice cream for a refreshing treat.

The activities were both fun and educational for the kids, the Penn State Extension Master Gardeners booth on bats educated kids about bats in the area and had crafty options for kids to make their own bat headbands and pinecone bats.

"We're teaching them how bats are pollinators, how they help us with having food on the table, how they get rid of mosquitos and how they're good things," said Kathy Gillen, a member of the Extension who was manning the booth.

"We're teaching kids about some of the fruits and plants that bats help to pollinate, about their houses, how they like to live... Fruits like coconuts, mangoes, wild bananas and avocados wouldn't be here if we didn't have bats," said Amy Strong, also manning the booth.

The Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts had derby car races where kids could test out cars that were made by kids in their pack. Each kid who came to the booth was able to pick a car and put it on the track to see if it would win, kids who raced their cars were able to win medals.

Tammy Garrison had a booth representing the Ross Library, the Friendship Community Library and the Renovo area Library. They were handing out ducks and bookmarks that let you etch a design into them.

Miss Holly from the library was doing fun crafts with the kids, and their booth also had storytime with 2023 Clinton County Fair Queen Christina Smith.

The drawing for area gift cards and the bikes began at 12:30 p.m., and children had to be present to win.

Dozens of area gift cards were handed out first to children in the audience whose names were drawn.

Some of the prizes won were: gift cards from It Is What It Is in Lock Haven, a gift card for a sandwich and hash browns from Dunkin Donuts, a gift card for a dozen donuts from Dunkin Donuts, a gift card for 50 munchkins from Dunkin Donuts, gift cards for $5 at Ice Shack, gift cards for 6 piece nugget meals at McDonalds, gift cards for Happy Meals at McDonalds, gift cards for $10 at McDonalds and a 3-month family membership to the YMCA in Lock Haven.

The grand prize drawings that had everyone on the edge of their seats were the bikes.

Jozie Kline won the girl's bike; Max Vonada won the boy's bike -- and the crowd was assured he would grow into it!
