MILL HALL — There was a big surprise at Central Mountain High School.

On Tuesday morning it was announced that Blaise Alexander Subaru adopted classrooms at CMHS as part of their Subaru Loves Learning event.

By partnering with AdoptAClassroom.org, Alexander Subaru and Subaru of America aim to make a difference in the lives of students in our region.

AdoptAClassroom.org has provided funding for resources and materials to more than 200,000 classrooms across the nation since 1998.

Dave Kelley, general manager of Blaise Alexander Subaru in Montoursville, presented 15 boxes of classroom goodies to administrators and students at CMHS.

“A lot of teachers don’t have the funds they need, and they end up spending their own money on the students,” said Kelley. “Every little bit helps. Each (chosen) classroom will get a box of supplies. Subaru reached out and asked the teachers what they needed or wanted in the boxes. We’re proud to be a part of this.”

The donation was received in the cafeteria where students helped to unload the boxes onto tables.

The boxes, filled with teaching essentials such as Expo markers, highlighters, pens, pencils, post-its and more, will be given to teachers that the students nominate.

One of the highlights of the box was $500 to be spent on whatever the teacher would like for the classroom.

Customers at Blaise Alexander Subaru of Montoursville were able to scan a QR code and choose items online to donate to the school. They also filled out special “thank you” apples which were filled with praise for local teachers.

One apple read, “Teachers change lives!” Another read, “Thank you for making a difference in children’s lives.” And a third said, “Thank you for your hard work and dedication to our students.”

These and many more apples were stuck to a cardboard cut out of a school bus which had been displayed in the showroom at Blaise Alexander Subaru of Montoursville.

Inside of the boxes was also a note, signed by Kelley, that detailed the contents of each box and also read, “From everyone at our store, we thank you. Teachers like you — who are committed to supporting the education of children in our community — are truly inspirational. We’re grateful for all that you do while giving your students the gift of learning and helping their curious minds grow.”

“The average teacher spends over $1,000 out of their own pocket to supply their classroom,” said Kelley. “It’s amazing. This will hopefully make a difference.”

Kelley was presented with a poster signed by various students at the high school to show their gratitude for being chosen for such a large donation.

Previously, other teachers nominated their colleagues to receive the boxes and they were chosen via a random drawing.

This year, the seven students who were called down to the event will be creating a list of teachers they love to learn from and towards the end of the week there will be a drawing to see which teachers will receive one of the boxes.

“We want to give these boxes to the 15 most deserving teachers. Not that other people don’t deserve it, but there’s some teachers out there that are going above and beyond. They’re probably the teachers you think about when you think about liking school, or being inspired. Those are the people we want to give these boxes to,” said Central Mountain High School Principal Nick Verrelli.

“This (donation) was extremely generous. The teachers are going to be pumped, not just for the boxes but the additional $500 to spend on the classroom. It’s really awesome. I appreciate the partnership with Subaru and the community reaching out to help teachers. This is just another way that shows our community is working together to do what’s best for our kids,” said Verrelli.

Starting at $3.69/week.
