‘Field of Flags’: St. John School unveils tribute to veterans

BELLEFONTE -- In a heartfelt tribute to honor the sacrifices and dedication of our nation's veterans, St. John School was proud to announce the creation of a poignant "Field of Flags" in its courtyard on Nov. 9.

This initiative aimed to instill a deep sense of connection and gratitude among students while visually representing the profound impact veterans had on our lives.

The decision to embark on this project stemmed from St. John's commitment to fostering a spirit of service within both its school and the broader community. Over the years, the school has engaged in various activities, such as sending holiday cards to Veterans at the VA in Altoona and participating in the Bellefonte Community Veterans Day Ceremony. However, the school sought a more immersive experience for its students, one that would cultivate a genuine understanding of the significance of Veterans Day.

This year, St. John School took a meaningful step by involving students, families and alumni in honoring veterans with a display of 329 flags in the school courtyard. The flags represented a collective effort to bring home the reality that every individual had been touched by the sacrifices of those who served or were serving.

The initiative was not just an act of remembrance; it was a visual, tangible representation of the far-reaching impact veterans had on our community.

The flags were placed by the school's 4th and 5th-grade students, alongside the efforts of a St. John alumnus and his father. The collaborative effort symbolized the unity and shared responsibility in recognizing the service of our Veterans.

Mrs. Miller, a faculty member at St. John's, shared, "The 'Field of Flags' is one way that I can honor all of those who served our country in war or peace. As citizens, we owe a debt of honor, respect and gratitude to all those who served in the United States Armed Forces."

In addition to faculty members, students also actively participated in the initiative, expressing their sentiments about Veterans Day.

"Veterans Day means a day to honor Veterans and to thank them for what they have done. I feel like I get to show respect to the Veterans and thank them for all that they have done," Fletcher Price, a student at St. John's, stated.

The "Field of Flags" held special significance for students who placed flags for their relatives. "My Dad was in the Marines. When we talk about it, he tells me about where he was, like the desert and Japan," Molly Tyson shared.

This personal connection enriched the experience, allowing students to learn about and appreciate the service of their loved ones.

Luca Turco, a student who played the trumpet during the ceremony, reflected on the finished "Field of Flags."

"I think it is a great opportunity to show the Veterans that I care," Turco said.

The display served as a reminder for Veterans of their service, the challenges they faced and the appreciation they continue to receive from the community.

St. John School believes that by learning about and honoring veterans, students would be inspired by their greatness and, in turn, contribute to the betterment of society. The "Field of Flags" was a manifestation of this commitment to fostering understanding, gratitude and a sense of community among the students.
