CASTANEA — The Clinton County Historical Society welcomes a brand new addition to the Castanea Train Station.

A New York Central wooden caboose, built between 1910 and 1911, was added to the museum yesterday with the help of donations. The new addition joins two other train cars, a 1941 Pennsylvania Railroad metal caboose and a 1953 Erie Box Car.

The new caboose was the last wooden car to go up the Pine Creek Valley in 1963 when the line was discontinued. It sat on a property near Cammal Station for 10 years or more before it was moved to Centre Hall for a possible restaurant. It sat there for several more years. Luther Gette and John Gummo made the suggestion for it to be restored and moved to the Castanea Train Station.

Now, after many years, the caboose has a permanent home alongside other pieces of historical train memorabilia for enthusiasts to enjoy. Williamsport Crane and Rigging assisted in placing the train compartment on the rails yesterday where it will sit for the coming days.

The Castanea Train Station, located at 15 Logan Avenue in Lock Haven, houses the Clinton Central Model Railroad Club. They have a computer controlled train model set-up and are open during the winter months for viewing. The museum also holds a replica water tower built from original plans by Keystone Vo-Tech students. The tower is used as an information kiosk on local places, events and local transportation history.
