BELLEFONTE -- New and returning Bellefonte Area School Board members took their oaths of office during their most recent board meeting.
New members Patrick Buck, Jennifer Barnhart and Timothy Kessling were welcomed with open arms by the rest of the board along with returning members Kimberly Weaver and Donna Smith.
Jon Guizar was unanimously elected as the Board President and Kimberly Weaver was unanimously elected as the Vice-President.
The reorganizational meeting also included the appointment of school board member roles as representatives. The CPI representative is Weaver; The Central Intermediate Unit 10 representative is Barnhart; the Tax Collection Committee representative and alternate are Andrew Royer and Kenneth Bean, Director of Fiscal Affairs; and the Central Pennsylvania School Employee Benefit Trust Trustees are Guizar and Kessling.
With the resignation of Jeff Steiner from the School Board of Directors, effective Nov. 17, there is a vacancy on the board.
The board intends to fill this vacancy by appointing an individual to fill the role through the first Monday of December 2025.
Interested individuals must be at least 18 years of age and must be a resident of the district for at least one year prior to the date of the appointment.
Letters of interest, resumes and applications are due by noon on Monday, Dec. 11, to Leslie Elder at either lelder@basd.net or mailed to 318 N. Allegheny St., Bellefonte, PA 16823.
The application includes three essay questions that candidates must answer in their own handwriting.
Applicants must explain their strengths or areas of expertise, their goals as a school board member and explain why they want to be on the board. They also must list their education, community memberships and affiliations and other personal information.
Candidates will be interviewed at 7 p.m. on Dec. 14 at a special meeting of the board at the Bellefonte Area Middle School cafeteria.
The 2024 meeting dates were also discussed and approved, with a couple of brief changes that will be reflected on the calendar. The full list of meeting dates can be found on the school district's website under the "school board" tab.
This meeting was the last of the 2023 calendar year. The board will reconvene on Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2024, at the Bellefonte Area Middle School cafeteria at 7 p.m.
