Cooperation between KCSD, SWC, PA Careerlink offers opportunity for student

LOCK HAVEN -- SWC Realty is fortunate to be partnering with Keystone Central Career & Technical Center (CTC) and PA CareerLink to offer a Capstone Cooperative Education work experience for a Keystone Central senior this year.
Capstone Cooperative Education is for students enrolled in a specialized program area of CTE. Through Capstone's educational program, students "cap off" their formal in-school career and technical education with a related employment experience at a school-approved, work-based learning site. Students who have met all of the required competencies of the CTE program are recommended for the program by their instructor and approved by the school counselor, the cooperative education coordinator and the director of CTE. Students are able to apply for employment in their career fields and receive school credits as well as wages for their experiences.
PA CareerLink has a program, Bridges to the Future, that offers career support and guidance to students in 9th-12th grade. The program includes several career exploration and planning activities such as job shadowing, company tours, employer presentations, college visits and paid internships. Students also have the opportunity to participate in Camp STEAM which focuses on careers in science, technology, engineering, arts and math, and the Business Challenge, which matches students with employers to create a creative solution to a real-world business problem.
Bridges to the Future also supports schools by offering students mock interviews, resume assistance, job readiness workshops, entrepreneurial courses, career pathway options and labor market information.

Tanner is a student in the construction trades program at the high school's CTC who is interested in pursuing a career in the real estate industry.
Tanner's ultimate goal is to be able to buy homes, renovate or restore them and then resell ("flip") those homes for a profit.
"I have always been interested in homes and the housing market. I look forward to working in real estate and helping individuals find their dream homes," Tanner said.
"When we were first approached by Daci Killinger, the Cooperative Education Coordinator at Keystone Central CTC, we were excited to have an opportunity to mentor and work with one of their students," Young said. "Our office takes pride in helping the community, both buyers and sellers, achieve their dreams. Our opportunity to work with a young individual like Tanner and to see him progress and achieve his own personal dreams and to watch him set goals for his future is very rewarding. We want him to be successful and happy in his career."
Through his construction trades instructor, Bill Probst, Tanner has learned many different skills that will help him with the renovations on the homes - trades like plumbing, electrical, framing, soldering and masonry, as well as concrete and foundation work, that will enable him to rehabilitate the homes without having to involve outside contractors.
Tanner began his internship with SWC Realty in Lock Haven on Nov. 13, 2023, and thus far he has completed all of his real estate courses and is looking forward to taking the state and national real estate exams in April. He will also be starting college courses this fall at Commonwealth University-Lock Haven to earn a business management degree.
"Tanner has the opportunity to become a licensed real estate agent before he graduates from high school in June," Young said of her young colleague.
When asked about his experience at SWC Realty thus far, "I feel that all of the agents here are very knowledgeable in the real estate industry. I believe that they are training me and helping to provide the skills that will lead me towards a successful career path in this industry."
Tanner, along with other new agents, have participated in market research and are given opportunities for on-site trainings with seasoned agents who offer marketing tips, advice and guidance.
"SWC Realty's partnership with Keystone Central's Cooperative Education Work Experience and the Bridges to the Future program with PA CareerLink has been a great success, and we look forward to working with other CTC students in the future. I strongly encourage businesses in our area to consider partnering with these programs to keep our students local and to build a strong workforce for the future," added Young.
