JERSEY SHORE -- A school-based sleep education and assessment program, which had been presented at a meeting earlier this month, did not even get a motion to bring it for a vote at a recent Jersey Shore Area School Board meeting.
The program, "Wake Up and Learn," is designed to help students and educators deal with issues of lack of sleep and how it impacts the learning process.
In her presentation to the board at a previous meeting, Christina Blessing, a project manager at Geisinger, Danville, told the board that the program was developed by a pediatric neurologist and sleep specialist to "help students in particular, but also the broader school community families, realize that sleep is a tool to reach your goals."
"Sleep is integral to every aspect of our lives," she said.
"Whether that's in academics and athletics, whether you want to have healthy relationships, all of these things are impacted by the quality and the health of our sleep," she said.
In other business, under personnel, the board approved the transfer of Amanda Stonerook from full-time food service assistant cook to a head cook position at $18.28 per hour; transfer of Alexius Reighard from food service head cook to an assistant cook position at $18.03 per hour; appointment of James Joy as assistant boys' basketball coach at a stipend of $2,921; appointment of Raven Derr as first assistant varsity wrestling coach at a half-shared stipend of $1,953; and a correction to the first assistant varsity wrestling coach, Aaron Hager, a half-shared stipend position at $2,298.
The board also accepted letters of resignation from Kalob Thomas, junior varsity basketball coach; and Jacob Anderson and Brody Smith, both half assistant varsity football coaches.
A letter of retirement from Jennifer Marriott, a kindergarten teacher at Salladasburg Elementary School for 30 years, was accepted by the board.
