Salvation Army shifts to growing demand for food assistance, homelessness

LOCK HAVEN -- The Salvation Army Lock Haven Corps will say goodbye to its Thrift Store located at 111 E. Main St., Lock Haven, on April 28. The location will cease all operations on May 18.
The decision to close the store comes after years of operating losses for The Salvation Army Lock Haven Corps. In its current state, the store also needs $70,000 in repairs to continue safely operating at its current capacity, according to a release from the Salvation Army.
"Closing the store was a tough but necessary decision. Operating at a continual loss, the store has been diverting funds from our other core services, which are in increasing demand, such as food assistance and homelessness resources," said Captain Kendall Stout, Corps Officer of The Salvation Army Lock Haven Corps. "Our focus will shift to these areas to meet the growing needs of the Lock Haven community."
The Salvation Army Lock Haven Corps is actively seeking partnerships with community organizations and businesses to continue providing clothing and food vouchers, a critical service the thrift shop offered to many in the community.
"Although the Salvation Army Lock Haven must cease the thrift store's operations, our commitment to the well-being of our community members remains strong. The Salvation Army is eager to work alongside local entities to maintain the availability of clothing and furniture vouchers for those who have depended on our thrift store for such support," Captain Stout added.
At this time, Stout said the future of the building isn't set in stone.
"I don't know what the future of the building is, we will be selling locally," she said.
