UPMC to cut 1,000 workers systemwide; no word on local cuts
WILLIAMSPORT — UPMC is reducing its workforce of more than 100,000 employees by a little more than 1%, according to Paul Wood, UPMC vice-president and chief communications officer.
That reduction of approximately 1,000 workers is in response to “the realities of a still-evolving, post-pandemic marketplace,” and is intended “to ensure that UPMC continues to thrive,” according to an emailed statement.
“Limited reductions are occurring throughout the health system, primarily among non-clinical, non-member-facing, administrative staff through attrition, closing of open positions, elimination of redundancies and other actions,” Wood said.
Enhanced severance pay and benefits coverage is being provided, according to the news release.
“This realignment will not alter UPMC’s investments in our communities, facilities, commitment to clinical care and research, strategic growth” or benefits offered to workers, Wood said.
