Stage at Talleyrand won’t downsize
Phase 1 construction slated for later in year

BELLEFONTE -- Despite speculation the project would be downsizing, the outdoor music venue in downtown Bellefonte, the Stage at Talleyrand, is slated to begin Phase 1 of construction as soon as October. Phases 2 and 3 are expected to begin once anticipated additional funding is secured.
The performance stage, tentatively known as the Stage at Talleyrand, was proposed to provide a proper multi-functioning outdoor performing arts facility better fit to accommodate performers and audiences. Currently, performances are held at the park gazebo, which lacks proper acoustics due to its inopportune location and design.
"While the gazebo is a wonderful part of Talleyrand Park, it was not designed as a permanent performance space. It has and will continue to be a backdrop for countless events and special moments, but some key elements are missing," wrote organizers.
"The acoustics are horrible, to the point we've had some professional acts that have complained bitterly and won't come back," said Development Committee Co-chair Thomas Bathgate who shared that the committee considered modifying or moving the gazebo, but ultimately decided that building a new facility was the best option.
"Presently, our whole buildout is about $2.5 million. The first phase will be much less than that, since it's just the stage. We think that will be about $1.2 million. Right now, we have in the bank about $1.1 million," he said. Bathgate has an extensive background in fundraising, notably helping raise $400 million as part of the leadership committee for the Penn State College of Engineering.
Certified, non-profit corporation Downtown Bellefonte Inc. has partnered with the initiative to become the fiscal agent for the development campaign. The Mainstreet Program works to help businesses arrive and thrive in the Bellefonte community.
A year ago, the Development Committee was provided a $1 million grant by the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development for the project that will, in large part, fund the first phase of construction.
Phases 2 and 3 encompass many of the proposed amenities, including bathrooms for guests and performers, dressing rooms and a reservable meeting space.
"If the second $1 million grant comes through, we definitely will expand the scope of what the construction project would be into Phase 2 and 3," said Bathgate. Previously, the Development Committee committed to the Bellefonte Borough Council that they will not have to raise any money for the endeavor.
Though it was reported by other news outlets otherwise, Bathgate clarified there are no plans to downsize the project or change locations. He also appeared confident that the remainder of the money to achieve their total fundraising goal was within reach.
"We have an application in for another $1 million grant, which would take us over $2.2 million. We have a pledge for $100,000 and a pledge for $500,000. We don't have the money in the bank yet, but those people are good to go and well heeled," said Bathgate.
