LOGANTON -- For its exemplary record of leadership, service and efforts to improve the school and community, the National Honor Society (NHS) awarded the Sugar Valley Rural Charter School NHS chapter the Overall Award of Excellence. NHS is supported by its parent organization, the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP), which also oversees the National Association of Student Councils.

The following was taken from the narrative submitted by Sugar Valley Rural Charter School's (SVRCS) chapter, The Phoenix Golden Key Society, to the National Association for evaluation of accomplishments and presentation of awards, "Committed to being constantly in the forefront of the community, Sugar Valley NHS creates an environment of trust and responsibility by communicating deftly, sharing their ideas, and listening to feedback from those around them. As chapter leaders, our officers embody the values of scholarship, leadership, character and service; inspiring those around them to enrich the school and community. As Sugar Valley NHS navigates an increasingly complex and interconnected world, the need for bold leaders that the NHS has helped create has never been greater. By embracing learned qualities, the Sugar Valley NHS can help chart a course toward a brighter and more sustainable future for the growing chapter."

"Receiving an NHS Chapter Pillar Award reflects the extraordinary commitment of students who are making a real difference in their school and community," said NASSP CEO Ronn Nozoe, "The Sugar Valley Rural Charter School chapter shows what's possible when young people come together to lead, serve and inspire others."

"Of the 17,000 active chapters in the nation, 20 of them received the Overall Excellence Award. It is an honor to be the adviser of one of them," said SVRCS NHS adviser Jodie Walizer.

Bryer Martin, acting chapter president stated, "This NHS chapter could be the most promising chapter we have had in a while. With all the students wanting to work and help out the community when needed, it shows their dedication to the organization."

Faculty council member, Broc Phillips, remarked, "The momentum that our chapter's hard work and dedication has built is inspiring. Each year, the Phoenix Golden Key Society goes further to benefit our community. Earning this award is truly an honor, but only the beginning of our journey."

The NHS Chapter Pillar Awards are prestigious recognitions to celebrate the outstanding achievements of NHS chapters across the country. In addition to basic requirements, the chapters must have demonstrated successful activities that exemplify one or all of the core values of NHS: scholarship, leadership, service and character.
