Area organizations plan Memorial Day events over weekend, day of holiday
A variety of municipalities and organizations will be holding events leading up to and on Memorial Day including the following:
HOWARD AREA
LIONS CLUB
The Howard Area Lions Club will hold their annual Memorial Service on Friday, May 23, at 6 p.m. at the Foster Joseph Sayers Memorial site, at Sayers Dam. In case of rain, the service will be moved to the Beech Creek Wesleyan Church.
AMERICAN LEGION POST 444, MILLHEIM
The annual Salute of Graves by the American Legion Post 444 of Millheim will be held on Sunday, May 25. A schedule of the cemeteries with approximate travel time is:
— 8 a.m. – Meet at Post 444
— 8:30 a.m. – Depart for Livonia
— 9 a.m. – Livonia Cemetery
— 9:15 a.m. – Brungart Cemetery, across from Krape Farm Lane.
— 9:30 a.m. – Rebersburg, cemetery is across from Miles Township Elementary School.
— 9:45 a.m. – Rebersburg, Rt. 192, at God’s Missionary Church
— 10 a.m. – Madisonburg #1 – alley before Fisher’s Harness Shop
— 10:10 a.m. – Madisonburg #2 – the middle cemetery, usually church is being held.
— 10:20 a.m. – Madisonburg #3 – at the end of the Alley
— 10:30 a.m. – Valley Mennonite, left side of Rt. 192.
— 10:45 a.m. – Green Grove Cemetery
— 11 a.m. – Salem Cemetery (Proceed inside for musical tribute and then salute outside.)

FARMER’S MILLS SERVICE – POST 444, MILLHEIM
— 9 a.m. – The annual Salute of Graves by the American Legion Post 444 of Millheim will be held on Monday, May 26, at Mountain Cemetery, Decker Valley.

— 2 p.m. – The annual Salute of Graves by the American Legion Post 444 of Millheim will be held on June 1 (first Sunday after Memorial Day).
BLAND J. ROSSMAN VFW
The Bland J. Rossman VFW Lock Haven Post 1630 will hold their Memorial Day Services at various local cemeteries and memorials on Sunday, May 25. All are invited to attend.
The schedule, with approximate times based on travel, is:

BEECH CREEK LEGION MEMORIAL DAY PARADE
The American Legion in Beech Creek will be hosting the annual Memorial Day Parade at 10 a.m. Beginning in Blanchard, behind the ball fields, the parade will travel through Blanchard stopping at the various cemeteries before merging onto Route 150 and continuing to the American Legion grounds on Wynn Avenue in Beech Creek. Those wishing to participate in the parade should get in the line-up area beginning at 9 a.m.
BEECH CREEK AMERICAN LEGION
Post 623 of the Beech Creek American Legion will start Memorial Day with the Firing at the Post Memorial at 8 a.m., the Hayes-Fearon-Bossert Cemetery at 8:30 a.m., Clark Cemetery at 9 a.m, and then at the Liberty Baptist Cemetery at 9:45 a.m., prior to the start of the Parade at 10 a.m. We would like to invite all to attend any of the Firings to include the Parade that has been going on for over 100 years.
SALLADASBURG PARADE
The Salladasburg Memorial Day Parade will start at 11 a.m. on Memorial Day.
Participants typically include patriotic floats, antique cars and tractors, kids on decorated bicycles, riding horses, scout troops, Little League teams and military service members.
Those who would like to participate should be in line on Dochter Street before 10:45 a.m.
The parade will be led by the Jersey Shore Area High School marching band and will also include fire engines from both Jersey Shore fire companies.
Immediately following the parade there will be a ceremony to honor our local veterans at Salladasburg United Methodist Church parking lot.
The National Anthem will be sung by Mr. Keith Barrows. Dr. Daniel Glunk will recite Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address and then the roll call of the veterans will be read by Mayor Douglas Ellsworth, followed by TAPS and a 21 gun salute by the Jersey Shore Honor Guard.
EAGLE CEMETERY
Memorial Day services will be held at the Eagle Cemetery on Monday, May 26, beginning at 1 p.m. The speaker will be Todd McCartney, a Nuclear Submarine serviceman who served in the Navy from 1979-1985. Eagle Cemetery is located along Old Route 220 near the Curtin United Methodist Church, rural Howard.
SCHENCK’S CEMETERY
Memorial Day Services will be held at Schenck’s Cemtery in Howard Township on Monday, May 26, beginning at 2 p.m. The speaker will be Norman Houser.
ADVENT CHURCH
Memorial Day services at the Advent Church and Cemetery at 1303 Moose Run Road, Bellefonte, between Milesburg and Yarnell, will be held at 9 a.m. on May 26. Afterward, beginning at around 10 a.m., the Advent Historical Society will have the first of this summer’s Music at the Advent concert series entitled Memorial Day Patriotic Hymn Sing.
The program will include traditional music, patriotic songs and hymns that you’re invited to sing along to. The museum and gallery will be open, with refreshments of coffee, pies and cookies provided by members and friends. This event is free and will be held rain or shine. The hymn sing will probably last until close to noon.
