Christmas Day accident leaves 3 dead, others with injuries

HOWARD — Three people were killed and three others left with injuries after a head-on collision on Christmas Day near Bald Eagle State Park, according to state police at Rockview.

One of the deceased victims and another in critical care are students at Keystone Central School District, the district said in a statement.

The crash occurred on North Eagle Valley Road, Route 150 near Swartz Hollow Road on Dec. 25, at approximately 2:26 p.m.

According to state police, at the time of the accident, a 2009 Pontiac G6 and a 2012 Nissan Pathfinder were traveling in opposite directions when both vehicles crossed the center line, resulting in the collision. Both vehicles sustained heavy front-end damage.

The driver and two passengers in the Pontiac were pronounced dead as a result of injuries sustained in the crash. Two surviving passengers in the Pontiac were flown from the scene with life threatening injuries. The driver of the Nissan was also transported with injuries of unknown extent, police said.

Details regarding the identity of those involved are being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

In response to the crash, KCSD issued a statement on the loss of one of the district’s students and his parents. His sister, also a KCSD student, has sustained life threatening injuries and remains in critical care.

“Our hearts are broken for this family,” said KCSD superintendent Dr. Frank Redmon. “On behalf of the Keystone Central School District, we extend our deepest condolences to everyone grieving this unimaginable loss. We also hold the surviving family members in our thoughts and prayers, hoping for strength and healing in the days ahead.”

“This tragedy has deeply affected our entire school community, students, staff and families alike,” the district said in a statement to the public. “In times such as these, we are reminded of the importance of compassion, connection and care for one another.”

As this tragedy affects the greater school community, counselors and support staff will be available to assist students that may be struggling with the loss when they return to classes Jan. 5.
