MH Boro hears update on pool funding

MILL HALL — Mill Hall Borough council heard from Clinton County Community Advisory Committee members Lenny Long, Bob Dwyer and former mayor Tom Bossert regarding the community pool reconstruction, along with other items during their January meeting.

The trio, also known as the dolphins, and Rick Ricardo, met earlier this month with Boyer Design to discuss creating opportunities for the borough to meet the needed financial status to secure a grant from DCNR.

With aging equipment, lack of ADA accessibility, a decaying pool deck and more — the pool has shown its age.

Constant maintenance costs reached between $25,000 and $50,000 each year.

To resolve these issues, council has a plan in motion, including a full aquatic facility renovation.

The pool will cost approximately $2 million to renovate to this extent, with the borough securing approximately $350,000 from donors to help. While this is an incredible accomplishment, it is only 35 percent of the needed amount. If they do not match the grant by 2026, they will lose the funding.

“Total cost for the pool and bathhouse came in at $2,862,786 and the current total funds raised are $1,986,403,” Dwyer said. “If special features including Raft Float, Snake Float, Sundeck finish, competition package, family restroom and kitchen are taken out, the cost will be reduced by a total of $197,237, leaving a shortfall of $679,145.”

Any of the special features not being included in the initial reconstruction of the pool and bathhouse can be added at a later time.

The group has continued discussing grant opportunities with DCNR, DCED and Congressman Glenn Thompson to meet their goal before continuing with local fundraising efforts.

At the time of the recent meeting, only one bid was received for this project during the initial bidding process but was not accepted due to conflict of interest.

This time, the borough is suggesting the group extend the bid to general contractors along with aquatic contractors to allow for more possibilities.

People throughout Clinton County have made use of the pool for recreation, social development, exercise and as a place to gather with loved ones for special events and occasions for more than 50 years.

The pool has seen thousands walk through its gates since opening in the early 1970s, offering families a safe and healthy outdoor space to enjoy the water and weather.
