Station Gallery to host Drypoint Printing workshop March 28; Limited seats available
LOCK HAVEN — The Station Gallery, 2 E. Bald Eagle St., Lock Haven, will be hosting a workshop with Chad Andrews on Saturday, March 28, and is encouraging local artists to consider joining.
Carol Cillo, Clinton County Arts Council board member, said in a release that no experience is necessary for Andrews’s Drypoint Printing class.
According to a release from the CCAC, “drypoint technique is a form of intaglio printmaking that originated in the 15th century.
The technique involves incising, or scratching, lines into a plate, inking the plate, wiping the surface clean and then transferring the incised inked lines of the image onto the page.
“Drypoint may have evolved from other intaglio techniques like etching and engraving,” the release said. “It was used in German and Italian prints in the late 1400s. However, it was not until the 1600s that drypoint was recognized as an independent printmaking technique.”
According to the release, drypoint printmaking has been embraced by a variety of artists, including Rembrandt van Rijn, Franciso Goya and Mary Cassatt.
Its popularity continued into modern day with contemporary artists like Jim Dine, Richard Diebenkorn and Kiki Smith also utilizing the medium.
“Drypoint prints have a distinctive aesthetic characterized by rich, velvety lines and unique burr that is created when the metal is displaced during the incising process,” the release noted. “This burr can enhance the textural quality of the print but tends to wear down quickly.”
The workshop will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the gallery. The day will start with an introduction and platemaking from 10 a.m. to noon, followed by lunch from noon to 12:45 p.m. — you must provide your own meal; and printing by hand from 12:45 to 2 p.m.
Those who take part are asked to bring a sketchbook for notes and sketching along with a 4×6 image such as a photo, printout or drawing you would like to use as a reference.
All supplies will be provided and you will leave the workshop with 4 to 6 prints and your plate.
The cost to participate is $65 with only three seats available at this time.
