Bucktail Medical, Lock Haven receive federal funds for projects

Bucktail Medical Center and the City of Lock Haven were among those to receive a portion of nearly $300 million in federal funding, U.S. Senator John Fetterman (D-PA) announced this week.

According to a press release from Fetterman’s office, $289,366,974 in Congressionally Directed Spending (CDS) funding was included in the 11 FY26 Appropriations bills signed into law, supporting 121 projects focused on affordable housing development, water infrastructure upgrades, equipment for police departments and other critical initiatives across Pennsylvania.

Projects supported include $183,829,000 for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ project to modernize the Montgomery Locks and Dam in Beaver County, the largest single CDS award included in the appropriations bill.

It also includes $2,174,000 for three projects within Clinton County such as $949,000 for Bucktail Medical Center to purchase new patient beds and upgrade radiological equipment, improve diagnostic capabilities and ensure equitable access to quality care in the area.

The funding continues to help the facility, which is the only full service hospital in Clinton County.

Bucktail Medical Center CEO Laura Murnyack offered thanks on behalf of the hospital’s administration, staff and board members.

“This grant will allow us to implement a key service line for the community that many people did not think would ever be possible and allow us to continue building on our recent successes,” Murnyack said.

She noted the funding will help properly equip the medical center to best serve its community.

“With this investment, BMC will be equipped to address the diverse healthcare needs of our community and ensure rural access to quality healthcare services. We are proud of what we have accomplished so far and grateful that Senator Fetterman and his federal partners recognize the importance of sustaining and improving essential healthcare services for rural Pennsylvania and its communities,” said Murnyack.

This funding follows an allocation of $262,740 by U.S. Congressman Glenn “GT” Thompson from the 2026 Community Project Funding. That funding is also being put towards radiology equipment and patient beds.

Other projects funded through Fetterman’s allocation include the City of Lock Haven Water Line Replacement for $825,000.

According to Interim City Manager/Planner Abbey Roberts, the funding will be used to replace water lines in the city’s drinking water system in Castanea Township.

“We have dealt with many issues along these lines in the past few years, leading to multiple years of funding requests and we are grateful for the award from Senator Fetterman this year,” Roberts told The Express. “The project timeline is dependent on program contracting and formal award, but construction may begin as early as 2027.”

Roberts said the repair will include lines along Quiggle, Greenwood, Sherwood, Collegewood and Fleming avenues and Brown and Grape streets.

“Overall, the project will increase water quality and conveyance for 139 residences,” she said.

She added the city will be contacting the Castanea Township Supervisors to keep them up-to-date on the project.

“While it is the city’s system, we understand how a project of this scale will impact property owners in the area,” she said.

The final allocation in the county is $400,000 toward Drinkable and Fishable Pennsylvania Streams While Supporting Pennsylvania Farmers. The project is set to help local family farmers adopt best practices to reduce pollution in streams across the Commonwealth.

“Bringing money back to Pa. is one of my core responsibilities as the senior senator. I’m proud of the work our community is doing and believe this funding will continue to show why Pennsylvania is a leader on all fronts,” Fetterman said in a release earlier this week.

Starting at $3.69/week.
