Keystone board accepting applications for Region 8 opening; due Feb. 20

MILL HALL — Filling vacancies continued to be a topic of discussion at the Keystone Central School District Board of Directors’ work session this week.

Its agenda on Thursday night included deciding what action the board chose to take in filling vacancies in regions IV and VIII.

For each vacancy, the board has 30 days after the seat is opened to exclusively search for a candidate to appoint to the position.

For Region IV, which includes Dunnstable, Wayne and Pine Creek II townships, the board was unable to come to a consensus amongst those who applied for the position.

Due to this, the Clinton County Court of Common Pleas is now accepting letters of interest to fill the position.

According to a release from President Judge Craig Miller, the courts are accepting letters of interest until Feb. 23. After which time, either himself or Judge Michael Salisbury will interview candidates and appoint someone to complete the remaining two year-term. This seat was held by Jeff Johnston, who resigned on Jan. 1.

At Thursday’s meeting, Board President Elisabeth Lynch noted the board could continue to put out the call for interested applicants and hold its own interviews.

“If the court appoints someone to the position before we do, then that’s it,” she added.

Board Member Chris Scaff said, due to the board’s obligation to fill vacancies in Region VIII and IX, he felt the other position should be left to the courts.

“Let the court do Region IV, we’ll handle Region IX and VIII,” he said.

The board elected to postpone interviews for Region IX, which encompasses Renovo and South Renovo boroughs and Leidy, Chapman, Steward, East Keating, Noyes, Grugan and Gallagher townships. The seat was initially filled by recently-elected Mary Kramer, who resigned mid-January due to being employed by Renovo Borough.

Interviews of two applicants, Roger Kshir II and Megan Houser, are scheduled to take place at a public meeting on Thursday, Feb. 12 at 5 p.m. A special voting session will follow these interviews at 6 p.m. where the board will look to appoint a candidate to fill the vacancy.

Also on Thursday night, the board began the process of filling the open seat in Region VIII, which encompasses Flemington Borough, Castanea and Bald Eagle townships.

The seat was initially filled by Tom Cannon, who passed away in January.

The board will accept applications from interested candidates in that region and statement of financial interest, which is required to hold the position, until Friday, Feb. 20 at 12 p.m.

Interviews for Region VIII are scheduled for 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 24, with a special voting meeting to follow at 6 p.m.

Applications may be emailed to: boardsecretary@kcsd.k12.pa.us or hand-delivered to: Keystone Central School District Office, School Board Secretary, 86 Administration Drive, Mill Hall, PA 17751.
