Keystone to offer summer meal program again in June

MILL HALL — Keystone Central School District will again offer a free summer meal program beginning June 8 at Central Mountain Middle School and Renovo Elementary School.

At its voting session last week, the board of directors heard from Sharon Berger, food services supervisor, about this year’s program.

According to Berger, the district is excited to offer this program to any student ages 1 to 18.

“It’s not just open to Keystone Central School District students, it’s open to the full community,” Berger said.

Last year’s program saw 10,228 breakfasts and lunches distributed to students. Food and Nutrition Services applied for this program in the spring and the program is approved by the Pennsylvania Department of Education.

On Thursday night, Berger said the district was approved Wednesday to move ahead with the program at both locations.

She noted they saw a high demand for it in Western Clinton County, leading staff to begin preparing the meal bundles at Renovo Elementary School instead of shipping them to the location.

She noted the meals are reimbursed through federal and state dollars.

Just like last year, the district will offer four days of bundled breakfast and lunches for children in the community on Mondays, beginning June 8 and ending on June 29.

“We’ll have a second distribution day each week where we’ll offer three days of bundled breakfast and lunches on Thursdays,” she said. “Those meals are on a first-come, first-serve basis until they run out. There is no registration required for anybody.”

Berger said parents or guardians who pick up meals will have the option to walk up or drive up to receive the bundles. Those who do so will need to provide their name and name of their children to receive the meals.

In closing, Berger reflected on the success of last year’s programs.

“We know with those types of numbers there’s a need for the program in the community. We want to welcome everybody,” she said.

Board Member Chris Scaff asked Berger if the district would be working with Sugar Valley Rural Charter School to bring the program to that portion of the county.

“I hadn’t yet, only because I didn’t have the approval from PDE just until yesterday (Wednesday). I will certainly reach out to them again,” Berger answered.

Scaff thanked Berger, noting this is another way to ensure the program reaches every corner of the county.
