LOCKPORT -- Students at Woodward Elementary School spent last week celebrating reading during Read Across America week, which each March promotes reading and inspires young learners to discover the joy of books.

Students were able to take part in a variety of fun and engaging activities designed to build excitement around books and literacy.

One of the biggest highlights of the week was the school's "Masked Reader" contest, which had students eagerly trying to guess the identity of the mystery reader each day.

Teachers and staff members dressed up in inflatable costumes and recorded videos reading to the students to be played during the day before each student made their guess.

With their faces hidden and voices sometimes disguised, the mystery readers kept students guessing while bringing stories to life.

Students listened carefully for clues and shared their predictions about which teacher or staff member might be behind the costume. The activity sparked plenty of laughter and conversation while keeping the focus on the joy of reading.

Another special visit came from members of the Commonwealth University-Lock Haven men's soccer team. The college athletes spent time reading with classes and talking with students about what it's like to balance academics and athletics as student-athletes, making sure to highlight the importance of reading.

CU-Lock Haven Head Soccer Coach Pat Long has been partnering with the elementary school over the last three years during Read Across America week.

After reading stories together, the players answered questions from students about athletics, college life and the importance of working hard both in school and on the field.

On the last day, students also had the opportunity to bring in their favorite book to read with a friend. The activity encouraged students to share the stories they love while practicing reading with a friend.

Through creative activities, special guest readers and time spent sharing favorite stories, Woodward Elementary's celebration made reading the center of a week filled with imagination, curiosity and fun.
