LH Fire Dept. reminds property owners, residents of burn regs
LOCK HAVEN, PA — The Lock Haven Fire Department is advising residents and property owners of important regulations regarding open burning and recreational fires within city limits following multiple complaints received over the past month.
According to information shared by Fire Chief Tyler Wooding, open burning is strictly prohibited within the city due to population density and the close proximity of homes.
“The burning of materials such as garbage, leaves, yard waste or other refuse presents both a significant fire hazard and a health risk to surrounding residents,” a release from Wooding said. “Burning waste can produce airborne ash and embers, increasing the likelihood of unintended fire spread.”
The city’s ordinance outlines the restrictions as follows:
— Chapter 340 (Solid Waste) and Chapter 307 (Property Maintenance) prohibit open burning of garbage, municipal waste, yard refuse and similar materials.
— Chapter 410 (Air Pollution) further prohibits the emission of ash, smoke or fumes that are harmful or objectionable to others.
While open burning is not permitted, recreational fires are allowed within the City of Lock Haven only when conducted safely and in full compliance with the Pennsylvania Fire Code.
Residents choosing to have recreational fires must follow these requirements:
— Fires must be used for warmth, cooking or enjoyment purposes only.
— Fire size must not exceed three feet in diameter and two feet in height.
— Only clean, untreated wood may be burned.
— Fires must be located at least 25 feet from any structure or combustible material.
— An extinguishing method must be readily available (garden hose, bucket of water or fire extinguisher).
— Fires must be constantly attended and never left unattended.
The fire department encourages residents to remain mindful of these regulations to ensure the safety of the community.
Residents who would like assistance verifying compliance of a recreational fire or who have questions regarding fire ordinances are encouraged to contact Wooding at twooding@lockhavenpa.gov or by calling 570-893-5901.
