Locally Focused: Good Neighbor Craft House finds a new home in Castanea

CASTANEA — After closing its original location in the North Bend area in January 2025, Vincent and Kate Kishbaugh spent a year trying to find the perfect location for their small craft brewery and restaurant, Good Neighbor Craft House.

Vincent, often known to his customers and friends as Vinnie, said the couple chose to close the North Bend location to search for a better opportunity.

He said they searched around the county for the right spot, with a few locations not being the right fit.

Lucky for them, the best spot happened to be near their own home in Castanea.

After months of renovations, the couple turned the former Train Station Restaurant — located at 201 Logan Ave. — into a craft brewing spot where beer lovers can enjoy homebrews and delicious food served up by Vinnie and his staff.

LAURA JAMESON/THE EXPRESS Pizza is a staple item on Good Neighbor Craft House’s menu. The restaurant often offers specials, including the Mexican street taco pizza.

Good Neighbor Craft House initially held a soft opening in April as its brewer, Jim Rogers, began to slowly roll out more and more craft brews.

Good Neighbor has 10 beers on tap.

Vinnie said this includes its four flagship beers — Castanea Creme Ale, Butch Light Lager, Rolland’s German Pilsner and Harvey’s Run Red Lager.

Other beers currently on tap include “The Cut” Hazy IPA, ‘Ol George O.S.B., Talon’s Flite, Station No. 3 Red Ale, The Golden Rule Saison and Run Wild IPL.

The Cut and Talon’s Flite are also donation beers, with a $1 for each going towards a particular local cause.

The Cut’s donations are being provided to The Haven Barber Shop to provide hair cuts to youth in the community in need.

Talon’s Flite donations are going towards the Lock Haven University Athletic Foundation.

If you aren’t particularly into beer, Good Neighbor has partnered with Ploughman’s Cidery out of Gettysburg to offer a few options.

Vinnie noted Ploughman’s has been nationally ranked in the top 10 best ciders in the last five years. Currently, Good Neighbor provides its Bird Watcher, Lumox, Dornick and Pompadour.

Vinnie has described these ciders as more on the dry side, often comparing some — such as Bird Watcher — to somewhat of a white wine.

The business also recently began to offer non-alcoholic beers from Athletica, too.

The drink menu is expected to expand to offer something for others as well.

Vinnie said he’s working to bring Freas Farm Winery, of Berwick, products to the business and get a cocktail menu up and running.

“We’ll be adding a cocktail list by summertime. It’ll feature familiar drinks that are classics with a twist,” he said.

Vinnie has hired local mixologist Kyle Solomon to create the menu, he said.

If alcoholic beverages aren’t your thing, and you’re at Good Neighbor for the food, the business also offers a variety of Pepsi products along with complimentary coffee and water.

Vinnie, a long time chef who loves to keep things as homemade as possible, has created a unique menu of items to enjoy at Good Neighbor.

One of its staple items are the 12-inch pizzas.

Vinnie said he’d always dreamed about owning a pizzeria.

“I always said I’d love to have a pizzeria where I can go in and work and get creative with things,” he said.

Though pizza isn’t the only thing on the menu, Vinnie has been able to live the dream of offering creative options for adventurous eaters.

Customers can build their own with a variety of classic toppings or enjoy a specialty pizza.

Staple specialty pizzas include I’m a Pretty Big Dill, a pickle lovers dream featuring ranch, dill pickles, mozzarella, provolone, cheddar and bacon; the Bianco Naples, with included whipped ricotta, garlic confit, onions, kalamata olives, mozzarella and provolone; the Franco & Lilly, which includes olive oil, Parmesan, pecorino, anchovies, banana peppers, kalamata olives and bread crumbs; They Call Me MEAT, which includes tomato, mozzarella, pepperoni, sausage, ham, roast beef, shredded pork and back; and the B-U-F-F-A-L-O, which features ranch, roasted chicken, house buffalo sauce, mozzarella and cheddar cheese.

Vinnie encourages people to keep an eye out on Good Neighbor’s social media, as he often adds new items for limited time only.

Most recently, to celebrate Cinco de Mayo, the restaurant included a Mexican Street Corn pizza.

“I’ll seasonally bring in new ideas and items. In the summer I’m considering options that incorporate fresh vegetables,” he said.

All pizzas also can be made with a gluten free crust upon request.

“We can also make your pizza into a stromboli,” Vinnie added.

Not in the mood for pizza? Good Neighbor still has you covered with some unique sandwich and appetizer options.

“When we looked at our menu, we wanted to provide something you can’t necessarily get anywhere else around here,” Vinnie said of the sandwich choices. “Our menu is small to help us keep those options coming.”

Staple sandwiches on the menu are the shredded Italian pork and Chicago style beef. Vinnie noted the sandwiches are made using oven roasted meat cooked in-house and served on a homemade sour dough roll.

He encourages everyone to keep an eye out for the weekly sandwich feature. So far, Vinnie has offered a New Jersey-style hot dog and a Vietnamese-style sandwich as he looks to expand the food offerings in the area.

Each sandwich is served with chips and a pickle.

Appetizers on the menu include the soup of the week, which can also include a soup and half sandwich combo; roasted garlic and chilli peel and eat shrimp and a soft pretzel with homemade mustard and beer cheese.

Vinnie noted the menu will be consistently changing and rotating over time.

“The entree will be changing every week,” he said, “along with the soup.”

Though Vinnie hopes people come for the food and beer, he would like for them to see Good Neighbor Craft House as a place to gather and enjoy great company and even some wonderful local entertainment.

So far, the business hosts a Singer/Songwriter night on Tuesdays, which gives local songwriters and performers the chance to showcase their original works; Karaoke night every Wednesday with rotating hosts, either bartender Loni Duck or Aly Di Costanzo and Ali Belcher; and the Human Jukebox on Thursday nights courtesy of Bubby and Swales.

“Friday and Saturdays we’re leaving open for people to come in and have dinner and just hang out,” Vinnie said. “We may look into bringing in other entertainment on those days from time to time.”

After just over a month in business at the new location, Vinnie said he’s grateful to the community that has turned out in support of he and Kate’s dream.

“This has been a life long dream to provide a place in our community where everyone can feel welcome,” he said. “We try to, in our daily business, be a voice for those who are maybe underserved in their community.”

Vinnie said he’s also grateful to the Castanea community for welcoming them with such open arms.

“So far, this has been a place within the Castanea community that people have accepted,” he said, noting they’ve really taken on the cream ale as their own.

This acceptance is something Vinnie said he and Kate were hoping to create when they reopened Good Neighbor.

“Our general goal is to fill a void in our community where everyone feels welcome and safe as a guest. In fact, our hours reflect that,” he said.

Good Neighbor Craft House is open from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesdays and 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesdays through Saturdays.

Vinnie said this is to create something that isn’t your typical local bar space.

“Our hours reflect that we aren’t a rowdy place. It’s a place where adults can feel comfortable coming in and enjoying a meal with a couple of drinks,” he said.

Vinnie said he feels extremely blessed for the opportunity to create that space and credits support from Kate in that.

“She’s fully supportive of everything we’re doing. She’s able to take care of things behind the scenes and I’m able to take care of the day-to-day,” he said. “But we share a main focus to create a gathering space. We are not a safe space for bigotry.”
