Soaking storm to drench region through Memorial Day weekend
LOCK HAVEN — A southwest-to-northeast moving storm will bring significant, steady rain to the region this weekend, with the bulk of the precipitation expected to fall on Saturday.
Thursday afternoon model runs are showing the Centre, Clinton and Lycoming county region arc taking the most direct hit from the storm, with some models suggesting storm totals north of two inches — and some isolated spots may trend closer to three.
Look for steady rain to begin late Friday night — perhaps around 10 p.m. or thereabouts — and will last all day Saturday. Scattered showers may begin earlier on Friday.
Steady rain is expected to move out of the area in the morning hours on Sunday, but conditions will stay cool, cloudy and showery through the rest of the day.
Memorial Day itself, on Monday, looks to be the best weather of the weekend — but forecasts still show it as being cloudy and with a possibility of showers as a weak trail of moisture follows the main storm out to sea. It will, however, be warmer: look for a high in the low 70s for Memorial Day — quite a bit better than Saturday’s 52 or Sunday’s 68.
According to the Williamsport National Weather Service climate station, we are still about an inch and a half of precipitation below average for the year. While we are out of the drought for now, this rain is still expected to be beneficial, especially as we head into the summer. It is unfortunate that it happened to arrive for a holiday weekend!
Looking ahead into next week, conditions are expected to improve and bring us a pretty gorgeous week. Highs will be in the mid-upper 70s, with low humidity and generally partly sunny skies. A few showers will be possible on Wednesday, but it looks like we will get a good opportunity to dry out after this storm moves through.
