McELHATTAN — Wayne Township was the place to be over the weekend as its board of supervisors, in conjunction with the Wayne Township Recreation Committee and Truck Lite Community Service Group, launched its America250 celebrations.
Supervisors Dave Calhoun, Terry Condo and Jim Maguire, along with representatives from the recreation committee and Truck Lite — the business who sponsored the event, welcomed residents and visitors alike to a kick off event at Wayne Township Nature Park on Friday evening.
The event featured Kim Verne singing the National Anthem and included former Army Sergeant Shaughn Braun as the guest speaker.
Members of the Jersey Shore Honor Guard, Rich Bater, US Navy; Scott Shoop, US Navy; Tim Showers, US Army; Rich Ulmer, US Army; and Jimmy Stewart, US Marine Corps., gave a presentation on folding the American flag with each step explained.
Trish Shellenberger, from non-profit A Soldier’s Hand, provided Star Packets to veterans and those with family in the military or who have served. She collected coloring pages from Robb and Mill Hall Elementary, which she will send to deployed troops.

Pastor Laura Gilbert, of Pathway to Christ Church, offered a blessing. Afterwards, the crowd carried flags and walked the newly developed Remembrance Trail in the park.
Refreshments of hot dogs, chips, water and a special red, white and blue birthday cake, donated by Sysco, were served.
The celebration continued on Saturday, packed full of events for everyone.
The day started with a 5K walk/run at Katie’s Crossing on the Bald Eagle Valley Trail. With almost perfect weather, over 100 participants traveled to this hidden gem along the West Branch of the Susquehanna River.
Many participants teamed up and walked as a group, with everyone crossing the finish line.

Early sign-ups received locally crafted commemorative give-aways including a wooden medallion made by Tom Confer and a T-shirt designed by Mike Hall of Stitchtech Tees.
Before the race, participants and spectators alike joined together and sang the National Anthem a-cappella. After the race, everyone was able to enjoy refreshments, including a patriotic cake.
The township supervisors and recreation committee thanked Mark the Shark from WSQV radio for being onsite for interviews and assisting with announcements along with Ashton Peters, representing The Express, for covering the weekend.
The committee noted a list of sponsors and volunteers will be shared at a later date.
The second event of Saturday was an assisted viewing from Katie’s Crossing.

“Those who made the journey in a golf cart were captivated by the breathtaking view and grateful to have had an opportunity to participate,” a release from the recreation committee said. “Many who participated in the morning events traveled to the Wayne Township Fire Company on Linnwood Drive for a delicious take-out chicken barbeque.”
The weekend wrapped up on Sunday with an outdoor worship service, held at Pathway to Christ Church on McElhattan Drive.
“It was a sight to behold with a large turnout. The weather was chilly; the surrounding and atmosphere were warm and inviting,” the release said. “Following the service, everyone was invited to enjoy an ice cream social provided by the church.
The recreation board thanked the numerous sponsors and volunteers who helped pull together the 3-day event.
“This could not have been accomplished without the cooperation and unity of many volunteers and supporters. Happy Birthday America,” the release said.
