Lonoconus to return as KC interim super; Board to vote next week

Alan Lonoconus

MILL HALL — A familiar name was included on the Keystone Central School District Board of Directors, as it reviewed a contract to hire Dr. Alan Lonoconus as its interim superintendent following Dr. Francis Redmon’s departure on July 1.

At its work session Thursday night, the board spoke very little about the contract and potential appointment of Lonoconus — who had previously served in the interim role in 2018 after the sudden departure of then-Superintendent Dr. Kelly Hastings.

According to the proposed contract, which will be voted on next Thursday, June 18, Lonoconus would be paid a per diem rate of $775 beginning Wednesday, July 1. It further notes that if any work is performed while not on school district property, he will document and itemize this work.

“The district shall compensate the acting superintendent at the rate of $400 per day/8 hours for any and all work/service, of any type or kind whatsoever, which the acting superintendent performs on behalf of the district while not on district property,” the contract reads.

It further notes Lononconus will not be provided health insurance, vision, prescription medication, dental or retirement benefits while in this role.

If the contract, which is set to expire on Dec. 31, 2026, were to be extended, it notes the per diem rate would increase to $800 per day.

Lonoconus’s return comes over eight years after being appointed in an interim role in January 2018.

According to previous reports in The Express, Lonoconus started as a teacher at Southern Columbia High School. Over the course of his career, he moved up to become curriculum director and superintendent. He’d also previously worked for Shikellamy and Bloomsburg school districts.

In 2018, Lonoconus was briefly considered as a candidate to permanently fill the role, but was unable to do so. The Express reported at the time he had previously retired from public school service and reportedly was deemed ineligible to serve as a permanent public school superintendent.

Starting at $4.10/week.
