Castanea Day set for July 18; Event to feature vendors, music and more
CASTANEA — The Castanea Township Recreation Committee and Supervisors announced plans for Castanea Day on Saturday, July 18, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., at locations throughout the township.
The event will open with a Vendor and Craft Fair from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Castanea Historic Railroad Complex and Bald Eagle Valley Trail, 15 Logan Ave. The fair will feature 30 vendors, artisans and exhibitors, an open house display by Clinton Central Model Railroad, open houses in historic cabooses by the Clinton County Historical Society and a basket raffle to benefit recreation activities.
“We love bringing together our artisans, crafters and non-profits and expose everyone to just how much talent there is in this area and region,” Diana Andrus, craft fair volunteer coordinator, said.
Just a few steps away at the Castanea Fire Company, 111 McElhattan Ave., the Wild World of Animals Family Show will kick-off at 12 p.m with 12-13 different species of animals including birds, reptiles, mammals and arthropods. Admission is free. Castanea Fire Company will offer breakfast and lunch items throughout the morning and early afternoon.
“We try to bring a slightly different animal, reptile or petting zoo program each year. This animal show is from Bentleyville and provides extensive shows and exhibits throughout western Pennsylvania. We’re excited to have them here and hope families will enjoy it,” said committee chair Rick Schulze.
Live music, pop-up outdoor bar and grill, inflatables for children and adults will begin at 4 p.m. at the Lock Haven Moose Lodge #100 Pavilion, 150 S. Hanna St., featuring The Caldwells from 4 to 6 p.m. with oldies from the 60s, and Anchor and Arrow from 7 to 9 .p.m, with funked up jazz, soul, rock and pop. The Caldwells are based in Altoona and Anchor and Arrow in State College.
John Gradel, township supervisor, Maripat Dion and Brady Carnahan, volunteers, helped bring together the live music at the Lock Haven Moose Lodge #100 Pavilion.
“We know our residents and visitors have different tastes in music,” Gradel stated. “We think The Caldwells will be a hit with anyone who enjoys oldies while Anchor and Arrow will target modern music lovers.”
Brandon Coleman, board chair of the supervisors, noted, “the recreation committee always offers a day honoring our chestnut legacy and bringing so much fun for residents and visitors. Each year, they expand efforts to satisfy nearly every interest. The diverse craft fair, collaboration with non-profit groups, participation of The PA/NJ Chapter of the American Chestnut Foundation, animal show and two types of live music make this an ideal day to spend with family, neighbors, friends and visitors.”
Debbie Reeder and Terry Mantle, volunteers, summarized, “our township is fantastic and we want to make Castanea a fun place to live, work and play. We’re excited to bring Castanea Day here once again.”
Participation in planning also included Charles Clukey, township supervisor, Castanea Fire Company, Lock Haven Moose Lodge #100, Clinton Central Model Railroad Club, Friends of Bald Eagle Valley Trail and the Clinton County Historical Society.
