Clinton County Fair gets support for improvements; Local businesses make it happen

MACKEYVILLE -- As you might imagine, the bustling, 65-acre Clinton County Fair complex in Mackeyville always has a lengthy to-do list. And support from friends is often key to making things happen for the nonprofit Clinton County Fair Association.
Fair representatives recently thanked several members of the local business community for stepping up to make a couple projects a reality.
Livestock Storage Building
Long-time Fair supporters Bill's Happy Camper RV Sales & Service and Miller Brothers Auto Sales in Mill Hall, Mountaintop Insurance Agency, Inc. of Bellefonte, and the Sons and Daughters of Italy and new business Miller Chevrolet in Lock Haven, teamed up to support the purchase of a new, 14-by-30-foot building for use by the Fair's Clinton County Youth Livestock Committee to store equipment.
"It all started with a conversation with Robert Gleghorn," said Fair Assistant Treasurer Connie Peiffer, who coordinated the effort. "He turned around and talked with Bob and Bill Miller, and things took off from there. We are so fortunate to have people like them who will help us with different initiatives at the Fairgrounds."
"This is fantastic," said Fair board member and Livestock Committee member Macky Kramer. "We have needed storage -- we just can't keep leaving equipment sit out to get ruined -- so we really appreciate this."
Kramer and Rob Baker, also a member of the Fair Board of Directors and the Livestock Committee, invited the businesses to the Fairgrounds to see the new building, which is situated behind the livestock barn. They said the building will house everything from rabbit and chicken pens, to wheelbarrows, gates, shovels and rakes.
Donors who were able to attend included Bob Miller of Miller Brothers Auto Sales and Miller Chevrolet; Jordan Miller of Bill's Happy Camper RV Sales & Service; and Robert Gleghorn, president of Mountaintop Insurance Agency, Inc, whose donation was made in memory of his mother, Laura Gleghorn, who passed away earlier this year.
Also supporting the project was Fair board member Cody Steinbacher, who, through his business, Steinbacher Excavating in Mill Hall, donated his time and equipment to prepare the site, spread stone and set the blocks for the new building.
In addition to Kramer and Baker, members of the Livestock Committee include Fair board member and Committee chairman Wayne Bechdel, Doug and Angie Harbach, Dave Snook, Wade Vonada, Bonnie Bechdel, Sarah Plotts, Courtney Burkey and Greg Connor.
New Loading Dock Decking
Another recently completed project was the addition of new decking to the loading dock at the Fairgrounds Main Stage Pavilion.
"The old deck had reached the end of its life, so we needed to get new decking in place before this year's Fair, since the loading dock is heavily used by all of the groups and organizations who perform on the Main Stage during Fair Week," said Rob Baker, who coordinated the effort, with support from his employer, M&R Contracting of Lock Haven, who donated time, equipment and materials for the project.
Volunteers who also provided labor included Fair board member Jim Wech, Fair Manager Donna Wech and Rob's children, Piper and Dylan Baker.
"We appreciate the support we receive from M&R Contracting," says Jim Wech. "They're not only supporting Rob and his personal interests, they're supporting the Fair. It's businesses like them who help us get many much-needed projects accomplished."
