When in Need: Community Foundation grant helps local fire company conduct rescues with new hi-tech gear

Technical rescue teams are rapidly phasing out legacy rope systems in favor of streamlined, multi-purpose hardware. Driven by tighter staffing models and the physical demands of high-angle operations, fire departments are transitioning to a specific ecosystem of modern gear: The CMC CLUTCH, CMC CAPTO, Texora anchor slings, and the highly versatile AZTEK kit, according to Wayne Township Vol. Fire Co. Deputy Chief Dustin Counsil, shown in this photo with a new rope system funded by the Clinton County Community Foundation grant for 2026. Counsil explained that the shift to this new gear marks a major evolution away from traditional, equipment-heavy setups, such as standard brake bars, separate prusiks and bulky load-release hitches, toward a unified, lightweight "cache" that allows low-manpower crews to execute complex raises and lowers with unprecedented speed. The Foundation this year provided multiple grants to fire companies and ambulance companies in support of their life-saving services and operations.
