Community Foundation grant to local nonprofit dental clinic helps keep kids, seniors smiling

LOCK HAVEN -- The team at the nonprofit Clinton County Community Dental Clinic has been incredibly busy this year, thanks in part to grant funding from the Clinton County Community Foundation.
"The Foundation's support is greatly appreciated and allows us to continue to help the community with education and dental hygiene supplies," said April Hall, clinic manager. The clinic provides basic dental care to patients with Dental Medical Assistance who have government-sponsored or subsidized dental insurance or who fall below the federal poverty guidelines and live within Clinton County and reside within the Keystone Central School District and surrounding counties on a limited basis.

Among the clinic's activities this year so far were: (To protect patient privacy, no patients are pictured.)
-- School and Daycare Visits: Earlier this year, Shelby Rice (RDH, PHDHP) and Laura Crawford (RDH, PHDHP) visited local daycares and elementary schools to provide dental health presentations and screenings. Early visits help build trust, reduce anxiety and identify issues early, setting the foundation for a lifetime of healthy smiles.
-- Clinton County United Way's Day of Caring (July): We participated by setting up an educational table with dental hygiene products and using models to demonstrate proper brushing and flossing techniques to both children and adults. We also hosted a popular tic-tac-toe relay game for the kids.
-- Kiwanis Kids Day (July): We provided educational materials, dental hygiene products and coloring activities for children, while answering dental health questions from the community. The clinic is participating in the STEP Senior Health Expo on Aug. 12.
"Good oral hygiene is especially important for older adults, as aging increases the risk for gum disease, dry mouth and tooth loss, which can impact nutrition and overall health," Hall said.
"Attending these events allows us to build human connections outside of the dental chair, establish local trust and reduce dental anxiety. In addition to these events, we continue to donate dental hygiene items to programs such as, Fulmer's Personal Care Home, SkillsUSA, the Woolrich Community Center, Beyond the Bell, the Lock Haven YMCA, local men's and women's shelters and the weekend backpack programs. We have donated over $1,500 in dental supplies."
