BELLEFONTE -- One driver was pronounced dead at the scene of a multi-vehicle accident along Interstate 80 in a portion of ongoing construction.
According to state police at Rockview, at about 3:32 p.m. on Aug. 25, a vehicle was traveling east on the roadway near the merge point of long-term construction in the area of mile marker 164 when it struck another vehicle which had slowed due to an impending backlog at the construction zone.
The first vehicle then struck another, causing it to catch fire and strike a fourth vehicle, police said.
The first vehicle continued east and struck two other vehicles, both catching fire, before striking a seventh vehicle and causing damage to its trailing unit, police said.
Following this, the first vehicle exploded and became engulfed in flames, police said.
According to police, the driver of the first vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene as a result of the crash.
No further information, including the identity of the driver, has been released at this time.
