LOCK HAVEN -- The sights and sounds of the annual Labor Day Regatta returned to Lock Haven this weekend as the 55th annual event officially got underway with its opening ceremony Saturday morning.
The Lock Haven Regatta Foundation has spent months preparing for the four-day celebration, with foundation members and community volunteers working throughout the summer to get East Water Street, Canal Park and the boat-racing area ready for tons of visitors.
The official opening ceremony was held Saturday morning, Sept. 5, with Clinton County Commissioner Angela Harding serving as the featured speaker.
The ceremony marked the beginning of a weekend built around a combination of boat racing, carnival rides, food, arts and crafts, live entertainment and community fellowship.
Saturday’s ceremony came as the West Branch of the Susquehanna River was once again transformed into a racecourse for the event’s signature powerboat competition. Racing began Saturday, following the opening ceremony, and continued through Monday, with competition presented by the Delaware Valley Outboard Racing Association and sanctioned by the American Power Boat Association. The regatta has earned national recognition for its racing venue.
But for many in the community, the regatta represents more than racing.
The annual event brings together local organizations, volunteers, businesses, vendors, musicians, racers and families for one of Lock Haven’s signature Labor Day traditions.
Saturday’s entertainment schedule continued after the morning ceremony, with No Excuses performing in the afternoon, followed by Whiskey Lips and Rize in the evening. The carnival, food vendors and arts and crafts displays also continued throughout the day.
The Lock Haven Regatta Foundation, a community-focused organization, has emphasized the volunteer effort behind the event in its preparations and announcements throughout the year.
After months of planning and preparation, Saturday’s opening ceremony provided the official starting point for another Labor Day weekend tradition along the Susquehanna -- one that continues to bring the Lock Haven community and visitors together year after year.
