Army flight simulator truck brings hands-on experience to Bellefonte Area High School

BELLEFONTE -- Bellefonte Area High School students got a hands-on look at some of the opportunities offered by the U.S. Army Wednesday, when a mobile flight simulator truck visited the school.
The semi-truck, which is based out of Fort Knox, Kentucky, is touring schools across the country. It stopped in Altoona before making its way to Bellefonte, with local Army units helping coordinate visits to schools along the tour.
Students had the opportunity to visit the truck and use three flight simulators and two driving simulators equipped with DUI goggles.
Vice Principal Andy Caruso said the school has an established relationship with the Army, which visits the school for different activities and outreach opportunities.
"We have a relationship with the army. They come in and try to do different things for us, mainly for recruiting purposes and just to help out. They offered the opportunity to bring a semi-truck that had three flight simulators and two driving simulators with DUI goggles for the kids to experience."
The flight simulator was a new addition to the Army's outreach efforts this year. Caruso said students enjoyed the experience and interacting with Army personnel.
"They [students] had fun with the flight simulator. They enjoyed interacting with the army," Caruso said.
The visit also gave students an opportunity to learn more about what the Army has to offer, including potential career and service opportunities.
"The goal on their end is to get interaction with the kids and get them interested in what the army has to offer," Caruso said.
Caruso added the positive response from students made the visit worthwhile and that he would welcome the opportunity to host the simulator truck again.
