BELLEFONTE -- The Bellefonte Area Education Association and Bellefonte Area School District have reached a tentative four-year contract agreement, averting a planned strike set for Monday, Oct. 12.

The union announced the agreement Oct. 10, and formally withdrew its strike notice.

In a Facebook post, the Bellefonte Area School Board of Directors confirmed the agreement, stating, "The Bellefonte Area School Board of Directors is pleased to report that a tentative four-year agreement has been reached with the Bellefonte Area Education Association. The association has formally withdrawn its strike notice for Monday, October 12th, ensuring that all staff will report as usual and school operations will proceed without interruption. Dates for formal ratification votes by both the Board and the Association will be scheduled in the near future."

Union President Allison Kyte also expressed appreciation for community support in a statement released Saturday.

"We thank the community for its strong support for our public schools," Kyte said. "We are hopeful we will be able to move forward with the district and continue to build the kind of schools Bellefonte students and families deserve."

The agreement remains tentative until both parties hold their formal ratification votes. Neither announcement provided details about the terms of the new contract.

The Bellefonte Area Education Association represents approximately 230 professional staff members at Bellefonte Area School District. The union is affiliated with the Pennsylvania State Education Association, which represents 177,000 teachers, school employees, aspiring educators, retirees and health care workers across Pennsylvania.
